An oxblood field carrying four columns of Turkmen güls — rounded octagons, each quartered and filled with small hooked devices in slate blue, ivory and red — with a small cruciform motif standing between every group of four. The framing is unusually deep: a wide band of small stars, several narrow guard stripes of dots and rosettes, and at each end a broad panel of stepped tribal forms in blue, ivory and red. Cream fringe at both ends.

Hand-knotted in wool. The ground is a deep oxblood rather than the brighter madder red most Bokharas use, which changes the effect considerably — the blue güls read as cool points of light against a dark field instead of competing with a warm one. There is visible abrash along the length, the soft horizontal banding where one dye lot gave way to the next. At 169×270cm this is a room-sized rug. A dark ground is the practical choice for a space that gets real use, hiding everyday marks far better than a pale rug would, though it shows lint and pale fibres.

100% wool pile, hand-knotted, with a natural fringe at both ends. Wool is resilient and forgiving underfoot, and a room-sized rug spreads wear over a large area rather than concentrating it.

The dark oxblood ground hides everyday marks well but shows lint and pale fibres more than it shows dirt. The abrash banding along the length is a feature of hand-spun, small-lot dyed wool and will not even out over time. Use a rug pad, particularly under furniture legs.

The broad panels at each end are the part most people walk past without registering, and they are the oldest thing on the rug. In Turkmen weaving that band is the elem, or skirt — the section of a main carpet that once hung down or lay beyond the seating area, given its own design rather than a continuation of the field. Here it carries stepped tribal forms in blue, ivory and red, quite different in character from the güls above it, and it exists on both ends. The güls themselves are tribal emblems rather than flowers; the shape identified the weaver's people the way a tartan identifies a clan, and the rounded quartered octagon here is the version that became the commercial standard. Note the ground colour: an oxblood rather than the brighter madder red most Bokharas use. That is a real difference in effect, not just in shade — the blue güls read as cool points of light against a dark field, where on a bright red they would compete.
