A hand-knotted double-knot rug from Pakistan, woven in 100% hand-spun wool on a cotton foundation in a classic Tabriz design. The warm gold field carries a full Shah Abbasi arabesque of large palmettes, rosettes and curved saz leaves on a scrolling vine, picked out in deep red, ivory, sage and teal.

A broad ivory main border of palmettes and flowering vine frames the field, stepped out through fine red and gold guard stripes. A one-of-a-kind piece.

The Shah Abbasi arabesque takes its name from Shah Abbas, the Safavid ruler who gathered Persia's finest weavers into royal workshops in the seventeenth century, and it remains the most demanding of the classical Tabriz designs: a continuous scrolling vine carrying large palmettes and curved saz leaves, drawn so that the eye can follow any stem across the whole field without losing it. Here the ground is a warm gold rather than the usual ivory or indigo, which throws the deep red and sage of the flowerheads forward and gives the rug an unusual warmth. The wide ivory border cools the composition again at the edge. Woven in Pakistan on a cotton foundation with the double knot, which packs the pile densely enough to hold this level of detail.
