A cream field packed corner to corner with flowering vine — palmettes, rosettes, curled leaves and small blossoms in rust, coral, teal, moss and cream — so dense that the ground survives only as pale threads between stems. Within it sits a large lobed diamond reserve, and at the very centre of that a small dark cartouche holding a single rosette: the only quiet point in the whole rug. Four heavy rust spandrels fill the corners, and a wide rust main border of palmettes and flowering vine frames the whole, with fine sawtooth guard stripes and cream fringe at both ends.

Hand-knotted in silk at 36/36 quality — 36 knots to the inch in each direction, close to 1,300 to the square inch and roughly two million knots in this rug. The pile carries a directional sheen, so from one end the cream field warms and the rust comes forward, and from the other the ground cools while the teal foliage lifts instead. At 78×125cm this suits a bedside, an entry or a spot beside a chair. It is a busy rug and will read as pattern rather than as colour from across a room — worth knowing if you are placing it against patterned wallpaper or a strong floor. Woven at 36/36 (approx. 1,296 knots per square inch).

100% silk pile, hand-knotted at 36/36 quality, with a natural fringe at both ends. Silk is stronger than wool thread for thread but far less forgiving of moisture, friction and sunlight, so this rug asks for more care than a wool piece and should never be cleaned at home.

The cream ground will show a spill more readily than a dark rug would, though the density of the pattern hides light marking better than a plain pale field. A silk this fine also shades and tracks where it is walked on — normal, and it reverses when the pile is brushed back. Use a rug pad underneath.

The medallion in this rug is far smaller than the design would seem to call for, and that is deliberate. On a field worked this densely the eye has nowhere to settle — every square inch is occupied — so the weaver provides a single small dark cartouche at the centre and nothing else. It functions as a full stop. Make it larger and it would simply become one more busy element; keep it small and dark and it holds the whole composition together. The other thing worth checking is the symmetry. Fold the design in half lengthways in your mind and the two sides match; fold it across the middle and they match again. But rotate it a quarter turn and nothing lines up, because the drawing is mirrored on two axes rather than repeated around a centre. That is the standard construction for a medallion rug, and it is why the corner spandrels are quarters of the medallion rather than a separate motif — they are the same shape, cut by the border.
