Understated and quietly opulent, this is a fine silk rug woven in the celebrated Mahi, or ‘fish’, design. A small flowering medallion rests at the centre of a soft champagne-gold field, which is filled edge to edge with the delicate Herati motif — a lattice of rosettes, curved fish-leaves, and tiny diamonds, drawn in fine navy blue. Worked in silk, the whole surface catches the light and shifts gently in tone as you move around it.

The beauty of the Mahi design is its restraint: instead of one bold motif, it offers an all-over rhythm of tiny, repeating forms that reward close attention. Here a warm champagne ground keeps the effect soft and luminous, while the navy drawing and faint sage accents give just enough contrast to read the pattern clearly. A tonal gold border of scrolling vines frames the field, finished with fine guard stripes.

Hand-knotted on a cotton foundation in lustrous silk, the rug carries an exceptionally high knot count — the only way to render the Mahi design this finely — and the soft sheen that only silk can give. The Mahi, or ‘fish’, design — also known as Herati — is one of the oldest and most beloved patterns in Persian weaving, named for the slender curved leaves that frame each rosette like two fish circling a pond. Repeated across the whole field, it forms a calm, scholarly lattice that has decorated fine rugs for centuries, especially those of Tabriz.

Rendered here in silk, the design reaches a level of fineness impossible in coarser materials: every tiny rosette and leaf stays crisp and distinct.
