A sandstone Nain rug with a small, finely drawn star rosette at the centre and slim pendants above and below. Around it, the open field is covered with scrolling vines, palmettes and small blossoms in the flowing Shah Abbasi style, mirrored with great precision. A wide border of flowering arabesques set in linked cartouches, between slim guard stripes of scrolling vines, completes the design.

Hand-knotted in Nain, central Iran, in fine wool. At 196×303cm (about 4.5 tatami) this is a large rug, well suited to a living room, a dining room or a bedroom.

Material: 100 percent wool pile, hand-knotted in Nain, Iran. Fine wool is naturally rich in lanolin, which gives it softness, a gentle sheen and a natural resistance to everyday dirt.

A light ground like this shows dark marks more than a deep ground would, and the pile looks lighter or darker depending on the direction it is brushed.

The rugs of Nain, woven in the old desert city of the same name in central Iran, are counted among the finest Persian rugs, admired for their dense, precise knotting and graceful drawing. This piece shows the classic Nain look at its most open and airy. A small star rosette, built from many finely drawn petals, sits at the centre with slim pendants reaching up and down, and the rest of the field is left to a light, flowing pattern of scrolling vines, palmettes and small blossoms in the Shah Abbasi style, mirrored with great precision. With no heavy corner pieces, the field feels calm and spacious. A wide border of flowering arabesques set in linked cartouches, between slim guard stripes of scrolling vines, frames the whole. A large rug like this brings quiet elegance to a living room, a dining room or a bedroom.
