Rug material

Only one available — one-of-a-kind.

A sandstone Nain rug with a round rosette medallion at the centre, built from ring upon ring of finely drawn petals with a lobed outer edge, and slim pendants above and below. Large shaped corner pieces with softly scalloped edges frame the field, and the ground between is filled with scrolling vines, Shah Abbasi palmettes and small blossoms, mirrored with great precision. A wide border of palmettes and blossoms on a flowing vine, between slim guard stripes of small flowers, completes the design.

Hand-knotted in Nain, central Iran, in fine wool. At 210×310cm (about 4.5 tatami) this is a large rug, well suited to a living room, a dining room or a bedroom.

Material: 100 percent wool pile, hand-knotted in Nain, Iran. Fine wool is naturally rich in lanolin, which gives it softness, a gentle sheen and a natural resistance to everyday dirt.

A light ground like this shows dark marks more than a deep ground would, and the pile looks lighter or darker depending on the direction it is brushed.

The rugs of Nain, woven in the old desert city of the same name in central Iran, are counted among the finest Persian rugs, admired for their dense, precise knotting and graceful drawing. This piece follows the classic Nain medallion layout. At the centre sits a round rosette medallion built from ring upon ring of finely drawn petals with a lobed outer edge, with slim pendants reaching up and down the field. Large shaped corner pieces with softly scalloped edges answer the medallion from each corner, and the open ground between them is filled with scrolling vines, Shah Abbasi palmettes and small blossoms, mirrored with great precision. A wide border of palmettes and blossoms strung along a flowing vine, set between slim guard stripes of small flowers, frames the whole. The sandstone ground keeps the fine drawing soft and warm. A large rug like this makes a quiet centrepiece for a living room, a dining room or a bedroom.
