Only one available — one-of-a-kind.

An ivory field carrying a fine, evenly spread flowering vine — palmettes, rosettes, curled boteh and serrated leaves in teal, moss, wine and cream. At the centre, a large lobed rosette medallion in terracotta with a teal and ivory core, and the same terracotta returns in four broad scrolling spandrels at the corners. Around it all sits a wide near-black main border of palmettes and flowering vine, worked in rose, teal and gold, with fine guard stripes and cream fringe at both ends.

Hand-knotted in silk at 36/36 quality — 36 knots to the inch in each direction, close to 1,300 to the square inch and around two million knots in this rug. The pile carries a directional sheen, so from one end the ivory warms and the terracotta comes forward, and from the other the ground cools towards pearl while the teal foliage lifts. At 77×126cm this suits a bedside, an entry or a spot beside a chair. The ivory ground is unforgiving of spills, so it is happier away from where food and drink are handled.

100% silk pile, hand-knotted at 36/36 quality, with a natural fringe at both ends. Silk is stronger than wool thread for thread but far less forgiving of moisture, friction and sunlight, so this rug asks for more care than a wool piece and should never be cleaned at home.

The ivory ground will show a spill far more readily than a dark rug would, and a fine silk pile shades and tracks where it is walked on — that shading is normal and reverses when the pile is brushed back. Use a rug pad underneath to stop it creeping and to take the abrasion off the foundation.

Watch where the terracotta goes. It fills the medallion and it fills the four corner spandrels, and almost nowhere else — the ivory field between them is drawn in teal, moss, wine and cream, and the border is a different palette again. That restriction is doing the compositional work. A medallion and its spandrels are meant to be read as one system, four corners belonging to a centre they never touch, and the simplest way for a weaver to say so is to give them a colour that appears in no other part of the rug. Cover the corners with your hands and the medallion suddenly floats, unanchored. The second thing to notice is that the spandrels are not quarter-copies of the medallion here, as they are in most medallion designs; they are scrolling arabesque forms of their own, related by colour rather than by shape. That is a harder trick to bring off and a sign of a well-drawn cartoon.
