A saffron-gold field — an uncommon and demanding ground colour — carrying a dense all-over arabesque of palmettes, curled leaves and small rosettes in teal, wine red, cream and navy, with a small star medallion at the centre. A wide crimson main border of flowering vine frames it, backed by gold guard bands of scrolling palmettes and a fine navy outer stripe. Woven into the outer band at one end is an inscribed cartouche, flanked by narrow green and cream bars.
Hand-knotted in wool at a very fine gauge, fully curvilinear throughout. A gold ground is the hardest of all to carry, because it sits close in value to the cream and the pale motifs drawn on it; the design compensates by outlining almost everything in navy or wine, so each element is separated by line rather than by tone. At 205×307cm this is a large room rug, big enough for a full seating group or a dining table with chairs pulled out. Signed — inscription not yet transcribed.
