Only one available — one-of-a-kind.

A prayer design, and unlike everything else of its kind it has a top and a bottom. A pointed mihrab arch springs from two slender columns and fills the upper field; from its apex hangs a lamp, drawn as a pale teardrop on a near-black ground. Below, two flowering trees rise from a vase on either side of a central bouquet, their branches picked out in rust, coral, teal and moss. The spandrels above the arch and the wide main border are worked in cream and beige with large palmette cartouches, and a rust selvedge and cream fringe finish both ends.

Hand-knotted in silk. The field is a genuine near-black rather than the navy it appears at a glance, which is what lets the pale lamp and the cream arch outline read so cleanly against it. The pile carries a directional sheen, so the black deepens or opens depending on which end you view from. At 74×118cm this works as a wall hanging, a bedside piece or an accent rug. One practical consequence of the design: it only reads correctly from one direction, so it cannot be turned end for end the way an all-over pattern can.

100% silk pile, hand-knotted, with a natural fringe at both ends. Silk is stronger than wool thread for thread but far less forgiving of moisture, friction and sunlight, so this rug asks for more care than a wool piece and should never be cleaned at home.

The dark ground hides everyday marks but shows lint and pale fibres readily. Because the design is directional it cannot be turned end for end to spread wear, so if it is on the floor, place it somewhere with light foot traffic and even light. Use a rug pad underneath.

Almost every classical rug design is built to be seen from any side — a medallion is symmetrical, an all-over pattern has no top. The prayer design is the exception, and every element here exists to establish direction. The arch points one way. The lamp hangs downward from its apex, which only makes sense in one orientation. The trees grow upward from vases that sit on the lower border as though on a floor. This is the one Persian format where the weaver has committed to a single viewpoint, and it is worth noticing how much of the drawing changes as a result: the field above the arch is treated as sky and left comparatively open, while the field below is treated as ground and filled with growing things. The practical consequence for an owner is that it cannot be rotated to even out wear, which is the usual advice for a rug. Better to hang it, or to accept that one end will always face the room.
