Antique Cream Turkmen Gül Bokhara, Hand-Knotted Wool Rug

100% wool pile, hand-knotted, finished with an ivory fringe at both ends. A design that separates its elements by tone rather than by colour needs the wool sorted carefully; a coarse grading would collapse the three steps into two.

This is a pale rug throughout, and with the border only a step darker than the field there is no forgiving dark area anywhere on it. Everything that a red Bokhara would hide will show here. The compensation is that the field is densely drawn edge to edge, so a mark has pattern to disappear into — and that anything which darkens the wool locally will read as another step in a ladder the rug already uses, rather than as a foreign mark.

On most rugs the border is where the tone changes. A dark frame around a light field, or a light frame around a dark one — the boundary is a step, and it tells the eye where the picture ends. Measure this one and there is no step. The field ground reads 207 on the nought-to-255 brightness scale and the güls drawn on it read 142. The border ground reads 169, which falls between those two figures. The frame is not lighter or darker than the field; it is a value the field already contains.

That is worth checking rather than assuming, because a photograph darkens towards the edges and could fake the same result. It does not here: the güls at 142 sit in the middle of the rug, where the light is strongest, and they are still darker than the border. So the ladder is in the wool. What it produces is a rug that reads as one continuous surface deepening gently outward rather than as a panel inside a frame — the borders take more than half the total area and still do not announce themselves. Saturation rises as the tone deepens, from 0.25 in the ground to 0.31 in the border and 0.43 in the drawing, so the darker the wool the more colour it holds, which is what keeps a palette this narrow from going flat.
