Rug material

Only one available — one-of-a-kind.

A warm sand Bokhara rug with five Turkmen güls in a single column, each an elongated hexagon with a zigzag centre, flanked by small tree-like arms with hooked tips in the Yomud style. Half-güls and stepped comb motifs line the long edges, so the pattern seems to continue beyond the rug. A border of stepped crosses and small star flowers, diagonal-striped guard bands and end bands of chevrons frame the design.

Hand-knotted in Pakistan in wool and silk, with a soft sheen that catches the light. At 76×116cm this is an extra small rug, a good size for an entrance, a bedside or a small space.

Material: Wool and silk pile, hand-knotted in Pakistan. The wool gives strength and body, and the silk adds a soft sheen to the pile.

Silk is more delicate than wool and can show pressure marks and changes of light more readily, and the pile looks lighter or darker depending on the direction it is brushed.

This rug draws on the güls of the Yomud, one of the great Turkmen weaving tribes, rather than the rounder octagon güls seen on most Bokhara rugs. Five güls run in a single column down the field, each an elongated hexagon with a zigzag, chevron-like centre, flanked on both sides by small tree or arrow-shaped arms with hooked tips. Along the long edges, half-güls and stepped comb motifs are cut off by the border, so the pattern seems to continue beyond the rug, and the open ground around each gül keeps the design airy. The main border is a lively chain of stepped crosses and small star flowers, framed by diagonal-striped guard bands, often called barber-pole stripes, a hallmark Turkmen detail. Each end closes with a band of chevrons and hooked motifs. The silk adds a soft sheen. It suits an entrance, a bedside or a small sitting area.
