Only one available — one-of-a-kind.

A deep indigo-wine field carrying the herati pattern at fine scale across its whole surface, with a stepped diamond medallion at the centre and four quarter-diamond spandrels closing the corners, all framed in salmon and all filled with the same herati. Diagonal salmon bands run from the medallion's points out towards the corners. Slim borders of palmette and flowering vine on a salmon ground, with fine guard stripes, close the rug. Ivory fringe.

Hand-knotted in wool. The field takes about 60% of the total surface, with the frame a slim 31 to 34cm on each side — unusually narrow for a rug of this length. At 245×349cm this is a large room rug, suited to a formal living or dining room.

  • Type: Hand-knotted pile rug
  • Material: 100% wool
  • Design: Herati with stepped medallion and corner spandrels
  • Size: 245×349cm (8'0"×11'5") — Large
  • Colour: Indigo-wine field with salmon medallion and borders
  • SKU: NPAR 317
  • One-of-a-kind: Yes

100% wool pile, hand-knotted, finished with an ivory fringe at both ends. A herati at this scale, with every leaf and rosette outlined, needs a high knot count and a closely clipped pile; on a coarser weave the pattern would blur into texture.

The dark field is forgiving and densely drawn, so there is no open ground for a mark to sit in. The salmon medallion, spandrels and borders are the lighter areas and will show more, and the borders in particular are slim — barely more than 30cm — so there is not much margin between the pattern and the edge. Worth knowing that the field photographs and reads considerably bluer than it measures: sampled, the ground is a dark wine rather than a true indigo, and it will look different under warm and cool light.

The medallion on this rug is not a separate ornament. Measure the repeat of the herati inside it and compare that with the field outside, and they are the same: between 8.6 and 9.2cm from one course to the next in all four places sampled — the dark field at the lower left, the dark field at the upper right, inside the salmon medallion and inside a corner spandrel. A spread of about seven per cent across regions that look like separate parts of the design.

So the pattern never stops. One continuous herati runs from selvedge to selvedge, and what makes the medallion and the corners appear is a change in the colour of the ground beneath it, not a change in the drawing on top. The salmon diagonals that seem to enclose them are outlines added over a pattern that carries straight on underneath. That is a very different way to compose a rug from the usual one, where a medallion is drawn as its own object and the field arranges itself around it. Here the field is primary and complete, and the composition is applied to it like light falling across a surface — which is why the medallion reads as a bright area rather than as a thing sitting on top of the field, and why the eye can move through it instead of stopping at its edge.
