A honey-gold field enclosed by a large oval outlined in navy — an unusual choice, since most medallion rugs place a lobed shape at the centre rather than describing the whole field as one great cartouche. Inside it runs a dense arabesque of palmettes, rosettes and curled leaves in navy, rust, sage and cream, with a small central rosette. Navy spandrels fill the four corners, and a wide terracotta main border of flowering vine frames the whole. Woven into the outer band at one end is a cartouche reading bāft-e Irān — Esfahān, Sirafian: woven in Iran, Isfahan, Sirafian.

Hand-knotted in wool at a very fine gauge, fully curvilinear throughout. The oval does something a medallion cannot: it turns the entire field into a single enclosed shape, so the corners read as separate territory rather than as leftover ground. This is a fine, hand-knotted piece that rewards a little extra care. 100% wool pile with a natural fringe at both ends, signed by the Sirafian workshop of Isfahan.

A gold ground is mid-toned rather than pale, so it hides everyday marks better than cream would, though not as well as a dark rug. Yellow dyes are among the least light-fast of any colour, so keep this rug away from a sunny window — here the field itself is at risk, not just the accents. Take particular care of the signature cartouche at the end, which sits close to the fringe where wear concentrates.

Most Persian medallion rugs put a shape in the middle of a field. This one inverts that: a single great oval, outlined in navy, encloses the entire field, and the corners become spandrels outside it. The difference is not decorative but structural. With a central medallion the eye starts at the centre and works outward; with an enclosed oval the eye reads the boundary first and the contents afterwards, so the rug behaves like a framed panel laid on the floor rather than like a pattern with a focus. It also solves the corner problem elegantly — in a medallion design the corners are leftover ground that has to be filled with quarter-medallions, whereas here they are simply outside the oval and can carry their own design. The cartouche in the outer band at one end reads bāft-e Irān — Esfahān, Sirafian. Look for it along the narrow band just above the fringe; it is about a hand's width across.
