An oval rug, woven to shape rather than cut down from a rectangle. The brick red field is packed with flowering vine — palmettes, rosettes, serrated leaves and small blossoms in teal, moss, rose, gold and cream — and at the centre sits a lobed medallion in near-black with an ivory core holding a single rosette. An ivory scrolling frame follows the curve of the field, and beyond it a wide near-black main border of palmettes and flowering vine runs unbroken all the way round. Cream fringe encircles the whole rug.

Hand-knotted in silk at 36/36 quality — 36 knots to the inch in each direction, close to 1,300 to the square inch and something over 1.6 million knots across the oval. The pile carries a directional sheen, so from one end the red warms and deepens and from the other it lightens towards brick. At 87×119cm this works beside a bed, under a small round table, or in an entry. An oval is harder to place than a rectangle — it wants space around it rather than alignment to a wall — but for the same reason it softens a room full of straight lines. 100% silk pile, hand-knotted at 36/36 quality, oval, with cream fringe around the full perimeter. Silk is stronger than wool thread for thread but far less forgiving of moisture, friction and sunlight, so this rug asks for more care than a wool piece and should never be cleaned at home.

A dark ground hides everyday marks but shows lint and pale fibres readily. Curved edges lift more easily than straight ones, so a rug pad cut to the oval matters more here than it would on a rectangle — an unsupported curve will start to ripple.

An oval forces the designer to rethink a layout built for corners. Look for what is missing: there are no spandrels. In every rectangular medallion rug the four corners carry quarter-medallions or scrolling brackets, because the corners are dead space that has to be filled and tied back to the centre. An oval has no corners, so the spandrels simply vanish and the field runs continuously from medallion to border. The border has its own problem. On a rectangle a border repeat marches along the straight and turns through ninety degrees at each corner, where weavers traditionally allow a small awkwardness in the join. Around an oval there is no corner to hide it in, so the repeat has to stretch and compress smoothly the whole way round, and any error accumulates visibly. Note also that the fringe encircles the rug: only the two ends are true warp ends, and the fringe along the curved sides is applied to match them.
