Only one available — one-of-a-kind.

A pale sage field carrying an all-over floral of palmettes, rosettes and slender flowering stems, drawn in ivory, soft grey and faded rust. A wide sandstone border of palmette-and-vine frames it through narrow guard stripes, with rust rosettes marking the repeat. Ivory fringe at both ends.

Hand-knotted in Ghazni wool in a washed, very low-contrast palette. Across the whole rug the median saturation measures 0.138, and more than half the surface sits below the level at which a colour registers as having a hue at all. At 215×310cm this is a large room rug, suited to a living or dining room.

100% Ghazni wool, hand-spun and naturally rich in lanolin, which gives it softness, a subtle sheen and a natural resistance to everyday dirt and spills. The washed, low-contrast palette is achieved in the finishing rather than by age, so it will not continue to lighten the way a genuinely faded rug does.

Be clear-eyed about this one: it is pale throughout, with no dark ground anywhere to hide a mark, and the design depends on differences in tone so slight that anything darkening the wool locally will show as a change in the pattern rather than as a stain. That is the trade for how calm it looks. The compensation is that the field is densely drawn edge to edge, so ordinary soiling has pattern to disappear into — the plainer border grounds are the exposed part.

Sample the plain ground of the field and the plain ground of the border, taking only the smooth areas of each so no drawing contaminates the reading, and convert both to Lab. The field comes out at one value, the border at another, and the distance between them is 3.32. To put that in perspective, when this catalogue matches a rug colour to a swatch, anything under three counts as an excellent match and anything under six as a good one. By that standard the field and the border of this rug are the same colour.

And yet the border reads perfectly clearly as a frame. Nothing separates it from the field except a change in what is drawn on it — an all-over repeat inside, a directional palmette-and-vine outside, and a pair of narrow guard stripes at the join. That is the whole mechanism. It is a considerably harder way to build a rug than the usual one, where a dark border simply cuts the field off, and it is why the piece stays quiet in a room: there is no strong edge anywhere to catch the eye and announce that a rug is present. The rest of the palette works the same way. Median saturation across the whole surface is 0.138, below the threshold at which a colour counts as chromatic, and the faded rust in the rosettes — under one per cent of the rug — is the only wool on it that anyone would call a colour.
