Only one available — one-of-a-kind.

Almost nothing on it, and that is the design. A plain camel field is framed by two fine terracotta lines set well in from the edge, and six small floral sprigs — a spray of green leaves with a pale bud beside it — are placed inside that frame, three to a side, facing inward. There is no border pattern, no medallion, no repeat. The sprigs are drawn small enough that from standing height the rug reads as a plain camel ground with a red outline.

Hand-knotted in Ghazni wool, a highland Afghan fleece with a high lanolin content that gives the surface its sheen. On a design this bare the wool is the whole story: the ground carries soft abrash, wide horizontal banding where one dye lot gave way to the next, and that variation is most of what you look at. At 159×250cm this is a room-sized rug. It is the most furniture-friendly kind of design — nothing important is lost when a table or sofa covers the middle — but a plain pale field is also the least forgiving of marks, so it wants a considered spot rather than a working one.

100% Ghazni wool, hand-knotted, with a natural fringe at both ends. Wool is resilient and forgiving underfoot, and the lanolin in a highland fleece like this one gives it a degree of natural resistance to soiling.

A plain pale field is the least forgiving surface a rug can have. Footmarks, vacuum tracks, furniture-leg crushing and any spill will all show with nothing to break them up, and the abrash banding — which is a feature of hand-spun wool, not a fault — will not even out over time. Use a rug pad, and be certain about placement before committing.

An empty field is harder to weave than a full one. A busy pattern hides everything — a knot out of line, a dye lot changing, a row pulled slightly tight — because the eye is occupied. Take the pattern away and every one of those things is visible across two and a half metres of open ground. That is why plain rugs are comparatively rare in hand-knotting and why the wool has to be good: there is nothing else to look at. Here the interest comes from abrash, the soft horizontal banding where one small dye lot met the next, which on a plain camel ground reads as gentle movement rather than as stripes. The six sprigs are placed rather than scattered — three to a side, facing inward, sitting just inside the line frame — and their job is to give the eye a resting point without breaking the emptiness. Note that they are all on the two long sides; the short ends are left bare, which keeps the rug feeling wide rather than long.
