A finely hand-knotted Khal Mohammadi runner from Afghanistan, woven in 100% hand-spun wool. The deep red field carries an all-over lattice of large lobed rosettes, alternating navy and red, each filled with a complete little garden of palmettes and leaves in green, gold, cream, salmon and pale blue, with smaller cross-form panels linking them.

A wide navy main border of palmettes and flowering vine frames the design, stepped out through ivory and green guard stripes. At 299cm long and 81cm wide this is a true runner, made for a hallway or a long kitchen. A one-of-a-kind piece.

  • Vacuum regularly on a low setting.
  • Turn the runner end for end every six months, as hallway traffic wears one end faster.
  • Blot spills immediately, working from the outside in.
  • Keep out of prolonged direct sunlight.
  • Have the rug professionally deep-cleaned when needed.

This is the most colourful of the Khal Mohammadi designs and the least tribal in feeling. Where the others work in two or three colours and keep to geometry, this one opens each rosette into a small garden — green leaves, gold palmettes, cream blossoms and pale blue buds, all inside a lobed frame, and no two compartments filled quite the same way. The lattice alternates navy and red so the field never settles into a single tone, and the effect along the length of a runner is of walking past a row of windows rather than over a repeated pattern. It shows a weaver working well beyond the standard vocabulary of the type.
