A finely hand-knotted Khal Mohammadi runner from Afghanistan, woven in 100% hand-spun wool. A dense grid of small octagonal Turkmen güls runs the full length of a wine red field, six across and more than thirty down, each quartered and picked out in navy, ivory and rust.

The borders are the striking part: nine bands in all, with pale salmon and ivory stripes set between the navy and red, so the field is framed by almost as much pattern as it contains. At 291cm long and 84cm wide this is a true runner, made for a hallway or a long kitchen. A one-of-a-kind piece.

  • Turn the runner end for end every six months, as hallway traffic wears one end faster.
  • Blot spills immediately, working from the outside in.
  • Keep out of prolonged direct sunlight.
  • Have the rug professionally deep-cleaned when needed.

Most runners give the field the attention and let the borders do their job quietly. This one does not: nine bands frame a panel barely wider than a doorway, with pale salmon and ivory stripes set among the navy and red so that the eye is drawn outward to the edges as much as down the centre. It is a way of making a narrow rug feel considered rather than merely long. Inside, the gül grid holds its spacing through more than thirty rows, which on a runner is the real test of a weaver — any drift in the drawing accumulates along the length and shows up at the far end. Woven in northern Afghanistan in madder-dyed wool, which deepens rather than fades with the years.
