A clear turquoise field carrying a large-scale floral of palmettes, curling saz leaves and rosettes on a wandering ivory vine, worked in cream, grass green, coral, crimson and navy. There is no medallion and no lattice — the vine runs edge to edge as one composition. A wide antique cream border carries big curled leaves and flowering palmettes through several narrow floral guard stripes, and a turquoise selvedge closes the outer edge.

Hand-knotted in Ghazni wool in the Chobi manner. The field is mirror-symmetric about both its axes, while the border runs as a repeat and is not mirrored at all. At 254×360cm this is a large room rug, suited to a formal living or dining room.

100% Ghazni wool, hand-spun in the Afghan highlands and naturally rich in lanolin, which gives it softness, a subtle sheen and a natural resistance to everyday dirt and spills. Ghazni wool takes a natural dye particularly well, which is what makes a turquoise of this clarity possible.

Both halves of this rug are comparatively pale and neither is especially forgiving. The cream border is the larger exposure — it takes more of the surface than the field does and sits where people step on and off. The turquoise field is mid-toned and densely drawn, so it copes better, but it is still a long way from a deep madder ground. This is a rug for a room rather than a corridor.

The field and the border on this rug were built by two completely different methods, and the difference can be measured. Fold the field in half down its centre line and compare the two halves: mirrored, they differ by 27.0 on a brightness scale; laid over each other unflipped, they differ by 37.7. Fold it across instead and the same thing happens — 27.5 mirrored against 39.1 unflipped. Both axes. The field is a reflection of itself in two directions.

Now run the identical test on the border and it comes back flat: 41.8 mirrored against 42.4 unflipped, a difference of barely one per cent. Flipping does not help, because the border is not a reflection of anything — it is a repeat, marching round the rug in one direction. So the weaver drew one quarter of the field and reflected it twice to fill the whole panel, then drew a single border unit and ran it round the edge. Two economies, each suited to its job: a quarter cartoon gives a field that resolves to a centre, and a running unit gives a frame that has no centre and does not need one. It also explains why the field never quite repeats — tested for a recurring interval, the strongest it produces is a weak 0.36. There is nothing to repeat. It is one drawing, made four times over.
