A teal-blue field — an uncommon ground for a Kazak, which usually runs red or ivory — carrying five stepped medallions down a pole, alternating red and cream. Each is an octagonal cartouche with hooked arms reaching out to either side and a small cross or star at its heart, and small eight-point stars sit in the spaces between. A wide sand-cream main border of rosettes and serrated diamonds frames the field, backed by a deep red outer band of stars and dogtooth stripes, with cream fringe at both ends.

Hand-knotted in wool. Everything is drawn rectilinearly — every hook, arm and star built from right-angled steps on the knot grid, with no curve anywhere. The blue ground carries visible abrash, wide horizontal banding where one dye lot gave way to the next. At 72×208cm this is a short, narrow rug: long relative to its width and useful in a small hallway or beside a bed, but not long enough to be a true runner — worth knowing if you are measuring for a corridor.

100% wool pile, hand-knotted, with a natural fringe at both ends. Wool is resilient and forgiving underfoot, which makes a Kazak a sensible choice for a spot that gets real use.

The abrash banding in the blue ground is a feature of hand-spun, small-lot dyed wool rather than a fault, and it will not even out over time. Indigo is also less light-fast than madder, so keep this one away from a sunny window.

The blue is the thing worth noticing. A Kazak field is nearly always madder red or undyed ivory, because those were the dyes a village weaver had in quantity; a blue ground of this depth needs indigo, which was traded rather than gathered locally and used sparingly. Putting it across a whole field rather than saving it for outlines is a deliberate and comparatively expensive choice, and it changes how the design reads — the red and cream medallions sit forward against a cool ground instead of competing with a warm one. The medallions themselves alternate in colour but not in shape: the same octagonal cartouche with hooked arms each time, red then cream then red. Look at the hooks reaching sideways from each one. They are structural as much as decorative, filling the width so the blue never opens into an empty gap beside a narrow motif, which on a rug only 72cm wide would show immediately.
