Only one available — one-of-a-kind.

A salmon field carrying a single column of stepped octagonal güls, each drawn in dark brown and cream with a small ivory cartouche at the centre and hooked appendages reaching out to the sides. Very wide multi-band borders of dense floral diaper, rosettes and diamond meander in cream, brown and salmon frame the field, and both ends close with a broad diamond-lattice panel. An inscription is woven into the plain band at the lower right, just inside the border. Cream fringe at both ends.

Hand-knotted in wool. The rug is signed — there is a woven cartouche of Arabic script in the lower right corner, which is unusual on Turkmen work. At 79×266cm this is a runner for a hallway or a landing. A mid-toned salmon ground is reasonably forgiving of everyday marks, though the cream in the borders will show wear first.

  • One-of-a-kind: Yes

100% wool pile, hand-knotted, with a natural fringe at both ends. Wool is resilient and forgiving underfoot, which makes this a practical choice for a corridor that gets real use.

A mid-toned salmon ground hides everyday marks better than a pale rug. Two things deserve particular care. The cream throughout the borders is the first colour to grey, and the signature sits in the lower corner close to the fringe — which is exactly where a runner takes its heaviest wear, as feet cross on and off the rug at the ends. If the signature matters to you, that corner is worth protecting.

Look at the lower right corner, in the plain salmon band just inside the border, and you will find a woven cartouche with a line of Arabic script inside it. Someone signed this rug. That is worth pausing over, because Turkmen weaving is not a signed tradition. The gül is an inherited tribal emblem rather than an individual's invention, the drawing is passed down rather than composed, and the overwhelming majority of Bokharas — including every other one you are likely to see — carry no name at all.

A signature moves a rug out of that anonymous tradition and into workshop production, where a named weaver or a named workshop is claiming the piece and expecting to be recognised for it. It also tells you something about how the rug was made: signing is a mark of confidence, and it tends to appear on work the maker considered worth being identified with. The script here is woven at the scale of the knots themselves, a few millimetres high, which is about as small as a legible letter can be made on a loom. We have not attempted a reading of the name — the wool is coarse enough at that size that any transcription would be a guess, and a wrong attribution is worse than none.
