Only one available — one-of-a-kind.

A soft sage green field carrying a single column of small Turkmen güls, each quartered into gold, cream and rose. Fan-shaped minor motifs stand at both field edges in the gaps between them. Wide borders of star-güls in cream and gold run down each side on the same green ground, and both ends close with a panel of boxed star-güls above a bold band of large-scale diagonal lattice in rose, cream and gold. Cream fringe at both ends.

Hand-knotted in wool. The drawing is entirely orthodox Turkmen; the ground colour is not, and green is the one colour this tradition almost never used. At 79×288cm this is a runner for a hallway or a landing. A mid-toned green hides everyday marks better than a pale rug, though the cream in the güls and border stars will show wear before the ground does.

100% wool pile, hand-knotted, with a natural fringe at both ends. Wool is resilient and forgiving underfoot, which makes this a practical choice for a corridor that gets real use.

A mid-toned green ground hides everyday marks better than a pale rug, though not as well as a dark one. The cream is the part to watch: it appears in every gül down the centre line and in the star-güls along both borders, and it is the first colour to grey. On a runner the traffic concentrates along the centre, which is exactly where the güls sit.

The unusual thing about this rug is the colour it sits on. Everything drawn on it is orthodox — the quartered güls, the star-gül borders, the boxed end panels, the diagonal lattice band — and on nine Turkmen rugs out of ten all of that would sit on a deep madder red. Green is the one ground colour the tradition hardly ever used. Some of that is practical: a fast green was among the harder dyes to achieve, generally needing two baths, a blue laid over a yellow, with the yellow the first of the two to fade. It is also commonly explained by association, green carrying a particular significance in Islamic tradition that is usually given as the reason it appears sparingly in rugs and rarely as something underfoot.

Which makes a green runner a mildly contrary object, a runner being the one rug in a house that exists specifically to be walked along. What is worth noticing is how completely the decision is carried through: the field, both side borders and the end panels all sit on the same green, so there is no red ground anywhere on the rug to fall back on. The consequence is visible in the güls. Gold and rose sit opposite green on the colour wheel rather than alongside it, so the same wool that would read as muted and tonal on a madder field reads here as bright and separate — the drawing gains a definition it would not have had on the ground it was designed for.
