Only one available — one-of-a-kind.

Three stepped medallions joined point to point into one red column down the centre of a blue-grey field. The top and bottom medallions have cream centres holding a navy snowflake-like star, while the middle one has a navy centre with a red and cream star. Every edge of the red column is lined with small hooked squares in cream, green and navy, and small figures in orange and red stand in the blue corners. A border of zigzag bands in cream, green and navy runs between narrow guard stripes of small red and gold crosses, closed by a plain red outer band and a short fringe at both ends.

Hand-knotted in wool. The three medallions share one continuous red outline — there is no ground between them — so they read as a single column rather than three separate shapes. At 65×87cm this is an extra small rug — a doorway, bedside or wall piece.

100% wool pile, hand-knotted in Afghanistan, with a short fringe at both ends. Wool is naturally resilient and hard-wearing, and the thick pile of a Kazak is made for everyday floor use.

Red is the dominant colour and hides everyday marks well. The cream centres of the medallions and the cream in the border are the lightest parts of the rug and will show dirt first; the blue-grey ground will show fading from strong sunlight before the red.

Look closely at the edges of the red column and you will see they are not smooth at all. Every step of the outline is lined with small hooked squares — tiny boxes with a hook at one corner, set in cream, green and navy — running all the way round the three medallions. On a Kazak these little hooks do the work that fine outlines do on a city rug: they soften the boundary between the red and the blue-grey ground and make the whole column seem to bristle with energy. The three medallions themselves are joined point to point with no ground in between, so the eye travels down them as one form. And as on many Kazaks, the middle medallion breaks the pattern — navy at its heart where the outer two are cream — which quietly marks the centre of the rug.
