A hand-woven kilim from Afghanistan, made in 100% hand-spun wool. Two large navy medallions sit one above the other on a warm red field, each filled with palmettes, rosettes and leafwork in coral, sage, gold and ivory, and hooked along every edge in the Caucasian manner.

A wide navy main border carries stylised flowerheads and vine, framed by red and cream guard stripes with a broad rosette band at the outer edge. Being a flatweave it is thin, light and reversible. A one-of-a-kind piece.

Care instructions

  • Always use a rug pad underneath — a flatweave slips easily without one.
  • Vacuum gently with the beater bar off.
  • Turn the kilim over every year — it is reversible and wears evenly if used both sides.
  • Blot spills immediately, working from the outside in.
  • Have the kilim professionally cleaned when needed — never machine wash.

Almost every flatweave in this group is built from bands. This one is not: it takes the twin-medallion layout of a knotted carpet and works it flat, which is a far harder proposition. Curves are impossible on a loom, so every lobe and hook of these medallions is built from stacked rectangles, stepped rather than drawn, and the weaver has to plan the whole shape before beginning it — there is no adjusting once the rows are laid. The palette is warm red and navy with sage, gold and coral picked out in the filling, and the two medallions are set one above the other so the rug is meant to be walked along rather than viewed from a single side.
