A sky-blue field carrying one long column medallion outlined in cream, built from a chain of panels: two red panels holding gold octagons with hooked devices, a green diamond at the centre, and a small red and navy octagon at each end, linked by narrow red bars of crosses and diamonds. The blue ground around the column is scattered with small stars, rosettes and square motifs, with rows of small S-shaped figures running down both sides and a single cream triangle holding an S in each corner. The border is a chain of cream and gold octagonal rosettes set on red, closed by a plain sky-blue outer band and a short fringe at both ends.

Hand-knotted in wool. Small S-shaped figures appear throughout the field — stacked in rows down both long sides and set alone in each of the four corners. At 63×94cm this is an extra small rug — a doorway, bedside or wall piece.

100% wool pile, hand-knotted in Afghanistan, with a short fringe at both ends. Wool is naturally resilient and hard-wearing, and the thick pile of a Kazak is made for everyday floor use.

The red panels and border hide everyday marks well. The sky-blue field and the plain blue outer band are softer colours: they will show pile shading, and fade from strong sunlight before the red does.

The medallion on this rug is a column of linked panels, a classic Kazak arrangement, but the detail that sets it apart is a small one. Look in the corners of the blue field: each holds a cream triangle with a single S-shaped figure inside. Then look down the long sides of the field, where the same S shapes are stacked in rows. The S is one of the most common small motifs in Caucasian weaving, often read as a stylised dragon or as a protective sign, and weavers scattered it freely through their fields. Here it is used with more order than usual — placed at the four corners like punctuation marks, and lined up along the edges like a border within the field — so that the rug's small motifs frame the column just as its large border frames the whole.
