A red field carrying one long column medallion outlined in navy, built from a chain of panels: two cream panels each holding a blue octagon with hooked devices, a cream diamond at the centre, and a small cream octagon at each end, linked by narrow bars of small crosses and diamonds. Beside each blue octagon, inside the cream panels, stand small animal figures in red and navy. The red ground around the column is scattered with stars, square motifs and rows of small S-shaped figures, with a cream triangle holding an S in each corner. A wide cream border of hooked cross motifs in red, navy, green and gold runs between narrow guard stripes, closed by a plain red outer band and a short fringe at both ends.

Hand-knotted in wool. There are four small animal figures on the rug, two in each cream panel, one on either side of the blue octagon — easy to miss until you look for them. At 65×120cm this is an extra small rug — a doorway, bedside or small hallway piece.

100% wool pile, hand-knotted in Afghanistan, with a short fringe at both ends. Wool is naturally resilient and hard-wearing, and the thick pile of a Kazak is made for everyday floor use.

The red field and outer band hide everyday marks well. The wide cream border and the cream panels of the medallion are the lightest parts of the rug and will show dirt and pile shading first.

Kazak weavers often slipped small animals into their designs — a dog, a goat, a horse — drawn in a few knots among the geometric ornament. This rug has four of them, and they are worth finding. Look at the two large cream panels in the column medallion, each with a blue octagon at its centre. On either side of each octagon stands a small four-legged figure in red or navy, facing inward, as if guarding it. They are tiny beside the bold octagons and hooked outlines around them, but they change the character of the rug: what reads from a distance as pure geometry turns out, up close, to have a few living things in it. The rest of the field keeps to the Kazak vocabulary — rows of S-shapes down the sides, an S in a cream triangle at each corner, and a broad cream border of hooked crosses.
