A sage-green field centred on a red hooked medallion: a blue and gold diamond with a small red cross at its heart, framed by red hooked arms and pierced by a long pole that ends in an anchor-shaped finial at each end. Stepped triangles in cream, blue and red sit to either side of the medallion, and at both ends of the field stand rows of small flowering shrubs in red, blue, gold and cream above a zigzag ground line. A wide red border of alternating X-shaped stars and cream diamonds runs between narrow guard stripes, closed by a plain green outer band and a short fringe at both ends.

Hand-knotted in wool. The two anchor finials at the ends of the medallion's pole point towards the rows of shrubs at each end of the field, so the medallion, the pole and the shrubs line up along the centre of the rug. At 66×93cm this is an extra small rug — a doorway, bedside or wall piece.

100% wool pile, hand-knotted in Afghanistan, with a short fringe at both ends. Wool is naturally resilient and hard-wearing, and the thick pile of a Kazak is made for everyday floor use.

The red border and medallion are forgiving of everyday marks. The sage-green field and the green outer band are softer colours and will show pile shading and fading from strong sunlight before the red.

The medallion at the centre of this rug has the silhouette Caucasian weavers call an anchor: a hooked diamond pierced by a long pole, with a split, arrow-like finial at each end. It is one of the oldest Kazak devices, and here it is drawn at its boldest — red hooked arms reaching out from a blue and gold diamond, the pole running almost the full length of the field. Around it, the weaver has added the details that make each Kazak different. Look at the two ends of the field: instead of plain ground, each has a row of small flowering shrubs standing on a zigzag line, like a strip of garden seen from far away. The anchor finials point straight at them, which ties the formal medallion to these small, almost pictorial touches. The sage-green ground is less common in Kazaks than red or blue, and it gives the red medallion and border an especially strong contrast.
