Four pale pink octagons stacked in a single column, each holding a stepped diamond gül in taupe, grey-blue and black, with four small red rosettes set around a pale centre. Narrow lattice bands separate the octagons and flare into coral and grey triangles where they meet the frame. A border of alternating grey-blue and coral lozenges runs between fine guard stripes, with a band of diamond lattice at each end and ivory fringe.

Hand-knotted in wool. Inside every gül the same arrangement repeats: four small red rosettes at the corners of a square, with a pale dot at the centre — sixteen rosettes in all across the four güls. At 78×125cm this is an extra small rug — a hallway, doorway or bedside piece.

100% wool pile, hand-knotted in Pakistan, with ivory fringe at both ends. Wool is naturally resilient and hard-wearing, and the dense pile of a Jaldar is made for everyday floor use.

This is one of the palest Jaldars — the pink field is light and largely plain inside each octagon, so it will show marks and pile shading more readily than a red or burgundy rug. It is best where shoes come off rather than straight in from outside.

From across a room this rug reads as four pale octagons with a diamond in each. The detail worth kneeling down for is inside those diamonds. At the centre of every gül there is a small square of four red rosettes, one at each corner, with a pale dot in the middle — the five-point arrangement known as a quincunx, one of the oldest ways of marking a centre in weaving and ornament. Each gül carries exactly the same one, so sixteen tiny red rosettes run down the length of the rug in groups of four. They are the only saturated red inside the field, and on the pale pink ground they act like the pupil of an eye: small, but they are what makes each diamond read as having a heart rather than just an outline.
