This fine Persian Sabzevar is worked in the beloved ‘garden panel’ (khesti) design — a grid of compartments, each a little walled garden holding a flowering tree, cypress, vase or blossoming plant, together forming a Bagh-e Behesht or ‘Garden of Paradise’. Every panel glows in a different colour — red, indigo, green, gold and cream — framed by an ivory border alive with flowering vines, vases and birds. It is one of the most joyful of all Persian designs.
Sabzevar rugs, from the Khorasan region of north-east Persia, are prized for their fine knotting and hard-wearing wool, hand-spun from highland flocks. The dense pile and natural dyes only mellow and improve with age. Worked entirely by hand over many months, every compartment is drawn a little differently — the honest mark of a genuine one-of-a-kind, hand-made piece, an heirloom to be handed down for generations.
