Four peach octagons stacked in a single column, each holding a stepped diamond gül in black, burgundy, gold and teal with a small star at its heart. The octagons sit in a dark aubergine frame, joined by narrow lattice bands of burgundy and gold, with small red and gold triangles where the bands meet the sides. A wide border of gold, rose and teal star rosettes on burgundy runs between fine guard stripes, closed by a plain peach outer band and ivory fringe at both ends.

Hand-knotted in wool. The dark frame and borders cover almost half the surface of the rug; the peach appears only inside the four octagons and in the narrow plain band at the very edge. At 81×121cm this is an extra small rug — a doorway, bedside or small hallway piece.

100% wool pile, hand-knotted in Pakistan, with ivory fringe at both ends. Wool is naturally resilient and hard-wearing, and the dense pile of a Jaldar is made for everyday floor use.

The dark frame and borders are forgiving and hide everyday marks well. The peach octagons and the plain peach band at the edge are the parts that will show dirt and pile shading first — and the edge band, being the first thing a foot touches, is the one to watch at a doorway.

Look at the very edge of this rug, just inside the fringe and along both sides. There is a narrow plain band there, and it is the same peach as the four octagons in the middle. Between the two, everything is dark: the aubergine frame around the octagons, the burgundy border with its star rosettes, the black guard stripes. So the rug is built as a sandwich of light and dark — peach at the centre, a deep band of dark ornament, peach again at the rim. It is a quiet trick, but it is what makes such a small rug feel finished. The pale outer band stops the dark border from running straight into the floor, and because it matches the octagons, the eye connects the edge to the centre and reads the whole piece as one composition rather than a picture with a heavy frame around it.
