A hand-knotted Yamoud rug from Pakistan, woven in 100% hand-spun wool on a cotton foundation. A single column of eight octagonal Turkmen güls runs down an olive green field, each one quartered and filled with hooked motifs in apricot, cream and black, separated by stepped chevrons.

The Yamoud format is defined by its proportions: the gül panel is drawn narrow and the borders are widened until they take up almost as much of the rug as the field, band after band of diamonds, hooks and small geometric repeats in camel and black. A one-of-a-kind piece.

The gül is the tribal emblem of the Turkmen peoples of Central Asia, and each tribe wove its own, repeated down the field so that a rug announced who had made it before anything else registered. Yamoud takes its name from the Yomud, and what distinguishes it is not the gül alone but the proportion around it: the field is drawn narrow to carry a single column of güls, and the borders are widened until they occupy almost as much of the rug as the field itself. The olive green ground is the rare part. These rugs are woven overwhelmingly on red or ivory, and green appears seldom enough that it is worth seeking out — it cools the apricot inside the güls rather than heating it, and sits with sage and stone in a way the red version never will. Woven in Pakistan, where Turkmen weaving traditions have continued for generations.
