An indigo field carrying an all-over floral design with no medallion — palmettes, rosettes and hooked serrated leaves in red, gold and cream, linked by a fine vine and running the full length of the runner until the border cuts them off. A wide golden-cream main border of eight-point stars and rosettes frames the field, with red guard bands of small crosses and rosettes on either side, and cream fringe at both ends.

Hand-knotted in wool. Everything is drawn rectilinearly, every curve built from right-angled steps on the knot grid. The indigo ground is deep and even, and the gold border is unusually wide relative to the field — close to a third of the total width on each side — which is what gives the rug its framed, formal look despite a field design that is anything but formal. At 81×290cm this is a runner for a corridor or a landing. A dark ground hides everyday marks well, making it practical for a space that gets real use.

100% wool pile, hand-knotted, with a natural fringe at both ends. Wool is resilient and forgiving underfoot, which makes this a practical choice for a corridor that gets real use.

The indigo ground hides everyday marks well but shows lint and pale fibres more than it shows dirt. The wide gold borders run along both long edges, exactly where a rug is walked past rather than on, but they are pale and will show scuffing sooner than the field. A runner takes concentrated traffic down its centre line, so use a rug pad and rotate it end for end regularly.

Measure the border against the field and the proportions are unusual. On most rugs the border is a frame — a tenth of the width, perhaps a fifth. Here the gold band takes close to a third of the total width on each side, which leaves the indigo field narrower than the two borders combined. That is a deliberate choice and it changes what the rug does in a corridor: the eye reads the gold first, the design second, so the piece registers as a band of light along the floor rather than as a pattern to be studied. The field itself is an all-over floral with no medallion and no centre, the palmettes and hooked leaves simply continuing until the border stops them — follow one to the edge and you will find it cut through mid-form. Everything is drawn on the knot grid, so what look like curving stems are staircases of right angles, and the small crosses in the guard bands are the simplest possible expression of that constraint.
