An ivory field of loose floral bouquets — rosettes, carnations, small blossoms and leafy sprays in rust, sage, pale blue and olive — around an oval medallion on a peach ground with a dark green rosette at its centre. A tall bouquet rises above the medallion and another hangs below it, and each corner of the field is filled with a large rust rosette and a fan-shaped palmette. A wide peach main border of flowering vine runs between guard stripes of small red rosettes, closed by a narrow dark edge and silk fringe at both ends.

Hand-knotted in silk. The medallion has no outline of its own: its edge is a ring of small blossoms, so it grows out of the field rather than sitting on it. At 66×94cm this is an extra small rug — a bedside, a side table or a wall piece rather than a floor covering.

100% silk pile, hand-knotted, with silk fringe at both ends. Silk is strong in tension but delicate in every other respect — it abrades, it marks with water, and it loses lustre permanently if treated like wool.

The ivory field and the peach border are both pale, and the ivory shows between the bouquets rather than being covered by them, so marks have nowhere to hide. The narrow dark edge that closes the rug sits right against the pale fringe, which is where any colour movement from water would show first.

Pick any flower in the ivory field and follow its stem back. It ends. Unlike a scrolling-vine design, where one continuous stem winds through the whole field and every blossom hangs off it, this rug is made of separate bouquets, each growing from its own short base — a spray here, a cluster of rosettes there, a fan of leaves in each corner — with ivory ground showing between them. The medallion follows the same rule. It has no drawn outline; its edge is simply the point where a ring of small blossoms stops and the ivory begins, so it reads less as a shape laid on the field than as the densest bouquet in it. The effect is closer to a garden seen from above than to a pattern, and it is why the rug looks different depending on where you stand: close up you see individual flowers, and from a few steps back the bouquets merge into a loose oval around the peach centre.
