Four dusty rose octagons stacked in a single column, joined by narrow taupe lattice bands, each holding a diamond gül in black and taupe whose outline is fringed all round with small hooks. The borders are wide bands of dense black and taupe diamond diaper and small hooked motifs, closed by a plain dusty rose outer band and ivory fringe at both ends.

Hand-knotted in wool. The whole rug is drawn in just two tones — dusty rose and black-taupe — with no accent colour at all, so the pattern is carried entirely by light against dark. At 79×115cm this is an extra small rug — a doorway, bedside or small hallway piece.

100% wool pile, hand-knotted in Pakistan, with ivory fringe at both ends. Wool is naturally resilient and hard-wearing, and the dense pile of a Jaldar is made for everyday floor use.

One thing to note before buying: at one corner of the border there is a small plain taupe patch where the diamond pattern is interrupted — please see the photos. Otherwise, the dark borders hide everyday marks well, while the dusty rose octagons and outer band will show pile shading and dirt first.

Most Jaldars use colour to separate their parts: a red field, navy borders, ivory and gold in the güls. This one uses almost none. Apart from the dusty rose of the octagons and the outer band, everything is drawn in black and a soft taupe — the lattice, the güls, the borders. With no accent colours to lean on, the design has to work purely through light and dark, like a pen-and-ink drawing. Look at the güls to see how: each diamond is a dark mass fringed all round with small hooks, and it is the pale rose ground showing between those hooks that gives the outline its crisp, feathered edge. Step back and the rug reads as four dark diamonds on four pale windows, set in a deep, finely textured frame — a quiet, graphic piece that sits easily with modern interiors.
