A crimson field carrying rows of stepped diamond güls — the Jaldar form, angular and lozenge-shaped rather than the rounded octagon of a Bokhara — each drawn in camel, cream and coral with a small hooked centre, and set in staggered rows so the field reads as a lattice. A wide camel-ground border of small diamonds and rosettes frames it, backed by several narrow guard bands, with cream fringe at both ends.
Hand-knotted in wool with silk, which is where the surface comes from: the silk catches light in the gül interiors while the wool ground stays matte, so the diamonds appear to sit slightly forward of the field. The effect changes as you move around the rug and cannot be captured in a single photograph. At 196×234cm this is a wide, near-square room rug, an unusual proportion worth measuring for. A crimson ground hides everyday marks well, though a silk-faced pile shows footprints in strong light.
