A finely hand-knotted double-knot rug from Pakistan, woven in 100% hand-spun wool on a cotton foundation in the Afshan Shah Abbasi design. The cream-gold field is covered edge to edge with an ogival lattice of curving madder-red vines, each compartment holding a fan-shaped Shah Abbasi palmette, rosettes and small serrated leaves picked out in teal, sage, gold and ivory.

A deep red main border of palmettes and scrolling vine frames the field, stepped out through several fine guard stripes in the same palette. A one-of-a-kind piece.

Afshan means scattered in Persian, and it names a field with no centre — no medallion to anchor the eye, just flowers and vines running continuously from one edge to the other. What disciplines that scattering here is the lattice: curving madder-red vines meet at regular intervals to enclose each Shah Abbasi palmette in its own compartment, so the field reads as ordered rather than crowded despite how densely it is drawn. The palmette itself, the fan-shaped flowerhead, takes its name from Shah Abbas, whose royal workshops fixed these designs in the seventeenth century. Woven in Pakistan on the double knot, the denser of the two knots used there, which is what allows the vinework to hold this level of detail across a rug of this size.
