A cream field filled with large, boldly drawn floral forms: red serrated palmettes on branching stems, navy and gold flower-heads, blue split-leaf arabesques with forked tips, and green hooked tendrils, all arranged around a central horizontal bar with a red rosette at its heart. The corners carry small gold and red lattice fans. A wide red border of big angular hooked scrolls in navy, gold and ivory, with small star-flowers between them, runs between sawtooth guard stripes, with a short fringe at both ends.

Hand-knotted in wool. The field is mirrored end to end around the central bar: the pair of blue arabesques, the gold four-petal flower and the red crab-like motif at the top of the rug all reappear, reversed, at the bottom. At 80×121cm this is an extra small rug — a doorway, bedside or small hallway piece.

100% wool pile, hand-knotted in Afghanistan, with a short fringe at both ends. Wool is naturally resilient and hard-wearing, and the thick pile of a Kazak is made for everyday floor use.

The cream field is the largest area of the rug and the one that will show marks and pile shading first. The wide red border is far more forgiving.

Most Kazaks are built from stepped medallions and stars. This one takes a different route and draws on the Caucasian tradition of large-scale floral carpets, where palmettes, split leaves and arabesques were enlarged and simplified until they became bold, almost abstract shapes. Look at the red palmettes at the sides of the field: each is a serrated flower-head on a thin stem, drawn with a few strong angles rather than curves. The blue arabesques near each end split into forked tips, and the green tendrils end in small hooks. Then fold the rug in your mind along the central bar with the red rosette. Everything above it has a partner below — reversed, as if reflected in water — which is what gives such an energetic design its sense of balance. The wide red border, with its big hooked scrolls, is drawn at the same bold scale, so the frame never feels finer or more delicate than the field it holds.
