Rug material

Only one available — one-of-a-kind.

A hand-knotted Laspanji rug from Afghanistan, woven in 100% hand-spun wool. The cream field carries rows of large hooked medallions and stepped cartouches in slate blue, orange, green and red, with smaller stars, rosettes and stylised plants filling the ground between them.

A broad orange-red main border carries angular hooked devices, framed by a narrow band of small flowerheads on cream and closed by a flat-woven striped panel and ivory fringe at each end. A one-of-a-kind piece.

Care instructions

  • Use a rug pad underneath to stop the rug slipping.
  • Vacuum gently with the beater bar off, avoiding the flat-woven ends.
  • Rotate the rug every six months for even wear.
  • Blot spills immediately, working from the outside in. Pale grounds mark more readily than dark ones.
  • Have the rug professionally cleaned when needed — never machine wash.

Laspanji weaving comes from northern Afghanistan and sits apart from the region's Turkmen work in almost every respect: a pale ground rather than madder red, medallions drawn large and open rather than repeated small, and a palette that reaches for orange, slate blue and green where its neighbours would use indigo and ivory. The medallions here are hooked along every edge and set in rows rather than columns, with smaller stars and stylised plants filling the ground between them, so the field reads as populated rather than patterned. The flat-woven striped panels at each end are left visible, as they were meant to be — they lock the pile in place and mark where the weaving began and ended.
