A cream field covered edge to edge with a lattice of small diamonds, each outlined in red and holding a hooked star, cross or four-part flower in navy, salmon, green, pale blue and gold. There is no medallion: the lattice simply runs on across the whole field and is cut off by the border on all four sides. A cream border of red and navy eight-pointed stars alternating with small diagonal bars runs between narrow guard stripes, closed by a sawtooth band of salmon and teal and a short fringe at both ends.

Hand-knotted in wool. The diamonds along each edge of the field are cut off by the border, so the lattice reads as part of a larger pattern that carries on beyond the frame. At 63×92cm this is an extra small rug — a doorway, bedside or wall piece.

100% wool pile, hand-knotted in Afghanistan, with a short fringe at both ends. Wool is naturally resilient and hard-wearing, and the thick pile of a Kazak is made for everyday floor use.

Because the field is densely patterned in many colours, it hides everyday marks well despite its cream ground. The plain cream parts of the border and the teal and salmon outer band will show pile shading and dirt first.

Most Kazaks are built around one large medallion. This one has none. Instead, the whole field is a lattice of small diamonds, and every diamond holds its own motif — a hooked star here, a cross or a four-part flower there — in a changing mix of navy, salmon, green, pale blue and gold. Step back and the rug reads as a single even texture, like a patchwork; step closer and each diamond turns out to be slightly different from its neighbours. That variety is the point of an all-over design: there is no centre to look at, so the eye keeps moving across the field. Look at the edges, too. The diamonds along all four sides are sliced through by the border, which tells you the lattice is meant to go on forever and the rug is only a window onto part of it.
