A cream field centred on a red diamond medallion with a serrated green and tan edge, holding a blue and ivory cross-shaped medallion with small stars at its heart. Large stepped half-diamonds in blue, with red and ivory centres, reach in from both ends of the field. Small tribal motifs — flower sprays, little vases and rosettes — are set in loose diagonal rows around the medallion. A wide red main border of hooked S-shaped scrolls and boxed rosettes runs between blue and tan guard stripes, with a short fringe at both ends.

Hand-knotted in wool. The blue shapes at each end are exact halves of a diamond, cut off by the border, so the centre diamond reads as one link in a larger chain that continues beyond the frame. At 80×115cm this is an extra small rug — a doorway, bedside or small hallway piece.

100% wool pile, hand-knotted in Afghanistan, with a short fringe at both ends. Wool is naturally resilient and hard-wearing, and the thick pile of a Kazak is made for everyday floor use.

The cream field is the lightest large area of the rug and will show marks and pile shading first. The wide red border and the medallion are far more forgiving.

Look at the two blue shapes at the ends of the field. Each one is a stepped triangle — and each is exactly half of a diamond the same size as the red one in the centre, sliced through by the border. Caucasian weavers used this device often: instead of drawing a single medallion floating on a plain ground, they set it in a row of diamonds and let the frame crop the row, so the rug shows one complete diamond and two halves. The eye completes the missing parts on its own, and the field reads as a window onto a longer chain of medallions rather than a closed picture. The small motifs in between — flower sprays, vases, rosettes — are laid out on diagonals that run from the corners of the centre diamond towards the half-diamonds, which quietly ties the three together.
