A cream field centred on a red hooked medallion with an anchor-shaped finial at each end of its long pole. Inside the red hooked frame sits a blue hexagon, then a gold diamond, then a navy diamond, with a small ivory and green rosette at the very centre. Blue stepped triangles sit to either side of the medallion, and at both ends of the field stand rows of small flowering shrubs in red, green and cream beside blue poles, above a zigzag ground line with a small diamond at the centre. A wide red border of alternating X-shaped stars and cream diamonds runs between narrow guard stripes, closed by a plain cream outer band and a short fringe at both ends.

Hand-knotted in wool. The medallion is built in five layers from the outside in — red hooked frame, blue hexagon, gold diamond, navy diamond, ivory rosette — each a different colour from the one around it. At 63×90cm this is an extra small rug — a doorway, bedside or wall piece.

100% wool pile, hand-knotted in Afghanistan, with a short fringe at both ends. Wool is naturally resilient and hard-wearing, and the thick pile of a Kazak is made for everyday floor use.

The cream field and cream outer band are the largest and lightest areas of the rug and will show marks and pile shading first. The red border and medallion are far more forgiving.

The anchor medallion — a hooked diamond pierced by a pole with a split finial at each end — is one of the classic Kazak devices. What makes this one worth a closer look is how it is built. Start at the outside and work inward: a red frame bristling with hooked arms, then a blue hexagon edged with small hooks, then a gold diamond, then a navy one, and finally a tiny ivory and green rosette at the very heart. Five layers, each a different colour from the one it sits in, so every step inward is marked by a clear change of tone. On a cream ground the effect is especially crisp — the red and blue outer layers stand out sharply, and the eye is drawn in, ring by ring, to the small rosette at the centre. Around it, the rows of flowering shrubs at each end keep the design anchored to the Kazak village tradition.
