A cherry red field carrying a pole of medallions that alternate in both shape and colour. One form is a feathered starburst, its points radiating outward like frost on glass; the other is a flattened lozenge filled edge to edge with a fine diamond lattice. They take turns down the length — gold starburst, navy lozenge, teal starburst, orange lozenge — with small rosettes and octagons sitting in the spaces between. A wide golden-cream main border of stepped rosettes and hooked motifs frames the field, backed by an indigo outer band of palmettes, with cream fringe at both ends.
Hand-knotted in wool. Everything is drawn rectilinearly, including the feathered points of the starbursts, which on a knot grid means each frond is a small staircase rather than a taper. The red ground carries visible abrash, wide horizontal banding where one dye lot gave way to the next. At 79×316cm this is a runner for a corridor or a landing. A saturated red ground is practical in a busy space and hides everyday marks far better than a pale rug would.
