Only one available — one-of-a-kind.

A finely hand-woven kilim from Afghanistan, made in 100% hand-spun wool. The whole surface is worked as concentric frames — a striped centre panel enclosed by border after border of soumak-embroidered diamonds, hooks and small rosettes, each ring different from the one inside it, in indigo, madder, ivory, coral, teal and green on a camel ground.

Rows of stylised birds run through the wide end panels, and the piece finishes in plain camel and indigo stripes before the fringe. Being a flatweave it is thin, light and reversible. A one-of-a-kind piece.

  • Origin: Afghanistan
  • Type: Kilim, concentric banded flatweave with soumak embroidery
  • Material: 100% wool
  • Size: 199×259cm (Medium Rugs (5x8 - 6x9))
  • Colour: Camel and indigo with coral, teal and ivory banding
  • SKU: NKL91127

Material: 100 percent hand-spun wool, flat-woven with soumak embroidered banding. No pile.

Care instructions

  • Always use a rug pad underneath — a flatweave slips easily without one.
  • Vacuum gently with the beater bar off, working along the bands rather than across them.
  • Turn the kilim over every year — it is reversible and wears evenly if used both sides.
  • Blot spills immediately, working from the outside in.
  • Have the kilim professionally cleaned when needed — never machine wash.

Rather than a field with a border, this kilim is built as a series of frames, each enclosing the next like the rings of a tree, and no two carrying the same motif. It is a way of working that suits the loom: the weaver adds a band, changes the pattern, adds another, and the composition grows outward from the centre without ever needing to be planned as a whole. Look along the wide end panels and rows of small birds appear among the geometry, which is where a weaver traditionally puts something of her own. The camel ground is the natural colour of the wool, with indigo, madder, coral and teal worked over it in soumak so the pattern stands slightly proud of the surface.
