Only one available — one-of-a-kind.

A bright madder red field carrying an all-over lattice of two alternating devices in wheat gold: a barbed, eight-armed form built from paired serrated combs, and a spool shape with flared ends and a banded waist. Small lozenges and rosettes sit at the intersections, and fine straight lines link the whole into a continuous grid. The field is enclosed by a broad plain band of camel wool, undecorated except for a single row of small triangles along its inner edge, and a red outer edge beyond it.

Hand-knotted in Ghazni wool. Two colours do the entire rug — a madder red and a wheat gold, with nothing else above half a per cent of the surface. At 247×301cm this is a large room rug, suited to a living or dining room.

100% Ghazni wool, hand-spun and naturally rich in lanolin, which gives it softness, a subtle sheen and a natural resistance to everyday dirt and spills. Ghazni wool is prized for the way it takes a natural dye, and on a rug this reliant on two flat colours that matters more than usual.

The plain camel band is the part to think about. It is the palest wool on the rug, it runs more than 20cm deep on the long sides, it sits exactly where people step on and off, and it has no pattern at all to break up a mark. The red field is far more forgiving — deep in tone and covered edge to edge in drawing.

The border on this rug is empty. That is not a figure of speech. Measured as local contrast — how much the surface varies from point to point, independent of how brightly it happens to be lit — the field reads 0.35 and the plain camel band around it reads about 0.11. The field carries roughly three times the drawing. The band itself is over 20cm deep down the long sides and takes nothing but a single row of small triangles along its inner edge.

In this weaving tradition that is close to a reversal. A border is normally where the ornament stacks up, four or five bands of it, each with its own repeat, and the field is what the frame is built to contain. Here the frame has been emptied out and given over to plain wool, and the entire design lives inside it. It changes how the rug is read from across a room: with nothing at the edges to hold the eye, the pale band works as a margin rather than as decoration, and the red panel reads as a single object sitting on the floor rather than as a picture in a frame. It also puts a great deal of weight on the wool itself, because a plain band of that depth has nowhere to hide an uneven dye or a wandering weft.
