A hand-woven kilim from Afghanistan, made in 100% hand-spun wool. The entire surface is striped — fine horizontal bands of deep aubergine, navy and madder red alternating with broader bands of pale wheat, several of them carrying rows of small woven diamonds, chevrons and interlace in the same restrained palette.

There is no medallion and no border: the stripes run edge to edge and end to end, closed only by a golden fringe at each end. Being a flatweave it is thin, light and reversible. A one-of-a-kind piece.

Care instructions

  • Always use a rug pad underneath — a flatweave slips easily without one.
  • Vacuum gently with the beater bar off, working along the stripes rather than across them.
  • Turn the kilim over every year — it is reversible and wears evenly if used both sides.
  • Blot spills immediately, working from the outside in.
  • Have the kilim professionally cleaned when needed — never machine wash.

This is the plainest form a kilim takes and the hardest to bring off. With no medallion, no border and nothing to draw the eye to a centre, everything rests on the rhythm of the stripes — how wide, how often, and where the pale bands fall against the dark. Get that wrong and the rug is monotonous; get it right and it settles a room the way a plain textile does, without competing with anything else in it. The palette here is deliberately narrow: aubergine, navy and madder against pale wheat, with the small woven diamonds and chevrons appearing only in certain bands so the surface has detail without pattern. Thin, light and reversible, it works as well layered over a larger rug as it does alone.
