Rug material

Only one available — one-of-a-kind.

A champagne Bokhara rug with twelve starburst güls in two columns of six, each a small stepped octagon surrounded by a ring of radiating leaf and arrow shapes. Smaller stepped diamond güls filled with tiny crosses sit between them, and half of each is cut off at the edges so the pattern seems to continue beyond the rug. A border of square tiles in a checkerboard rhythm, guard stripes of small hooked motifs and an end band of linked diamonds frame the design.

Hand-knotted in Pakistan in wool and silk, with a soft sheen that catches the light. At 77×120cm this is an extra small rug, a good size for an entrance, a bedside or a small space.

Material: Wool and silk pile, hand-knotted in Pakistan. The wool gives strength and body, and the silk adds a soft sheen to the pile.

Silk is more delicate than wool and can show pressure marks and changes of light more readily, and the pile looks lighter or darker depending on the direction it is brushed.

This rug follows the Turkmen and Bokhara arrangement of major and minor güls, with a bold, sparkling version of the major gül. The twelve major güls, in two columns of six, are starbursts: a small stepped octagon at the centre, ringed by radiating leaf and arrow shapes, so each one reads like a snowflake or a star. Between them sit smaller stepped diamond güls filled with tiny crosses, and along the sides and ends these minor güls are cut in half by the border, so the repeat seems to continue beyond the rug. With no bands joining the güls, the field stays open and orderly. The main border of square tiles, alternating small crosses and diamonds in a checkerboard rhythm, is framed by guard stripes of small hooked key motifs, and a band of linked diamonds closes each end. The silk adds a soft sheen. It suits an entrance, a bedside or a small sitting area.
