Rug material

Only one available — one-of-a-kind.

A soft aqua field covered with rows of large lobed medallions, each outlined in pale cream and filled with fine, delicate floral detail drawn only a shade lighter than the ground. The medallions are set in staggered rows across the whole rug, with small floral sprays between them, and run right to the edges with no border, finished with a short fringe at both ends.

Hand-knotted in Afghanistan from wool. The pattern is tonal — cream on aqua, with no strong contrast — so from a distance the rug reads as one calm, even colour, and the medallions only appear as you come closer. At 200×297cm this is a room-size rug for a living room, dining room or bedroom.

Material: 100 percent wool pile, hand-knotted in Afghanistan, with a short fringe at both ends. Wool is naturally resilient and hard-wearing, and the dense pile is made for everyday use in living rooms, dining rooms and bedrooms.

A light aqua ground shows marks, traffic paths and pile shading more readily than a darker rug. It suits rooms where shoes come off, and turning it from time to time helps it wear evenly.

This rug is built on a repeat borrowed from damask fabric: large lobed medallions set in staggered rows across the whole field. What makes it unusual for a hand-knotted rug is how quiet it is. The medallions are outlined in pale cream and filled with fine floral detail drawn only a shade lighter than the aqua ground, so there is almost no contrast anywhere. Stand across the room and you see a single soft colour; walk closer and the rows of medallions surface one by one, each slightly different because each was knotted by hand. With no border, the repeat simply runs off all four edges, so the rug feels more like a length of fabric laid on the floor than a framed picture — an easy fit for a modern living or dining room.
