A near-black indigo field carrying a dense scrolling arabesque of palmettes, curled leaves and small blossoms in gold, cream, teal and rust, with a lobed medallion at the centre worked in gold and coral and pendants reaching to either end. Gold spandrels fill the corners, and a wide terracotta-red main border of flowering vine frames the whole, backed by gold guard bands. Woven into the outer band at one end is a cartouche reading bāft-e Irān — Esfahān, Sirafian: woven in Iran, Isfahan, Sirafian.

Hand-knotted in wool at a very fine gauge, fully curvilinear throughout. The palette is warm all the way through — there is no cool colour anywhere except the small teal accents — so the rug reads as glowing rather than as contrasting, with the indigo working as depth behind the gold rather than as a colour in its own right. At 199×309cm this is a large room rug, big enough for a full seating group or a dining table with chairs pulled out. Signed Sirafian, Isfahan.

This is a fine, hand-knotted piece that rewards a little extra care. 100% wool pile with a natural fringe at both ends, signed by the Sirafian workshop of Isfahan.

The dark ground hides everyday marks well but shows lint and pale fibres readily. Take particular care of the signature cartouche at the end — it sits close to the fringe, where wear concentrates, and it is the part of the rug that cannot be replaced. A fine pile also crushes under furniture legs, so use a rug pad.

The cartouche in the outer band at one end reads bāft-e Irān — Esfahān, Sirafian: woven in Iran, Isfahan, Sirafian. Look for it along the narrow band just above the fringe; the panel is about a hand's width across, flanked by small green and red bars. Beyond the signature, the thing worth understanding here is how the dark ground is being used. Count the colours and almost every one is warm — gold, cream, coral, rust, terracotta — with teal appearing only in small quantities. The indigo is not really functioning as a colour at all; it is functioning as depth, a dark behind which the warm palette can sit and appear lit. That is why the rug reads as glowing rather than as high-contrast: there is no cool mass anywhere to argue with the gold. Compare it with a cream-ground rug of the same design and the difference is not brightness but the sense of the pattern floating rather than lying flat.
