Aubergine and Ivory Turkmen Panel, Hand-Knotted Wool Rug

100% hand-spun wool, hand-knotted, with an ivory fringe. The bold panel of hooked devices across the lower end is the traditional finish for a rug of this kind, and it is woven at a larger scale than anything in the field.

About as forgiving underfoot as a rug gets. Half the surface is a near-black ground and under 1.5% is pale enough to count as neutral, so there is almost nothing to mark. The trade is lint: a ground this dark shows pale fibres and pet hair far sooner than it shows dirt. The ivory borders and the ivory combs are the only vulnerable colour and they are also the whole readable design, so they are worth protecting.

There are two patterns on this rug and they are not both meant to be seen at once. Measure the brightness of each element against the ground and the reason becomes clear. The ground sits at 29 on a nought-to-255 scale. The deep red figures drawn all over it sit at 69 — forty points above, which at any distance is barely a difference at all. The ivory hooked combs sit at 166, a hundred and thirty-seven points above the ground.

So one of the two patterns carries across a room and the other does not. The ivory accounts for just 4.4% of the rug and it is the entire visible design: the descending files of combs, the panel divisions, the stars in the border. The red drawing covers far more ground than the ivory does and is effectively invisible from standing height, emerging only when you are close enough to be within a metre or so. It is a deliberate way to build a tribal rug — a bold, legible skeleton for the room and a second, quieter layer that only rewards someone sitting on the floor beside it. The field's median brightness of 31 is what makes it work: on a lighter ground the red would compete with the ivory and both layers would arrive at once.
