Intricate and finely drawn, this rug is woven in the celebrated Mahi, or “fish,” Herati pattern — an all-over lattice of small diamonds, rosettes, and curved fish-leaves that covers the entire deep navy-blue field. At its centre sits a slender ivory pole-medallion with a small blue heart, echoed by matching pendant medallions above and below.

Against the dark navy ground, the tiny Herati motifs glow in rust-red, salmon, gold, ivory, and soft green — a dense, shimmering field that rewards a close look. A coral-red main border of palmettes and flowering vine, with green and ivory accents, frames the design and lifts the whole rug with warmth, while a navy outer band ties it back to the field.

Hand-knotted on a cotton foundation with the tight double knot, the rug shows the very high knot density this pattern demands — the mark of a fine city-style weave. The Mahi, or “fish,” design — known in Persian as Herati — is one of the oldest and most beloved all-over patterns in Oriental weaving. Its repeating unit of a small diamond flanked by curved leaves was thought to resemble fish circling a pond, and it became a signature of the Tabriz and Bijar weaving traditions.

Worked here in fine wool on a deep navy ground with a slender pole-medallion, the pattern demands an exceptionally high knot count to render its tiny, precise motifs. Rewoven by hand in Pakistan, the rug’s small irregularities are the signature of the weaver’s hand, not flaws.
